The masterplan allows a mosaic of habitats to be experienced by visitors in a number of ways. Guests can stroll or cycle around the reserve and take a picnic to the sculpture park. School groups or wedding parties may utilise the potential water taxi from Holme which could have an audio tour pointing out habitats and points of interest. The Great Fen visitor centre, the Pier, will form the public focal point within a new living landscape in the Fen Basin.
The Pier extends to 56m in length, its whole life cycle process is considered with thought given to construction access, deliveries, carting away of spoil, and the use, and eventual re-use or recycling of construction materials. The building will be self-sufficient, with only minimal connection to services infrastructure and will look, feel and smell like it is of the Fens, to visiting people, wildfowl and other animals.
